Mandalay and its Environment
  Mandalay
Mandalay was the last capital of the Kingdom of Myanmar, which still has considerable cultural and religious significance. The second largest city in Myanmar, Mandalay is about 700km north of Yangon and stands on the east bank of the Ayeyarwaddy River.The majority of monks in the country reside in and around the Mandalay area.Stone carvings of Buddha statues, gold tapestry, silk weaving and gold leaf cottage industry sites are fascinating cultural spots for tourists.
 
Sagaing
20 km west of Mandalay, Sagaing was once the capital of two Myanmar Kingdoms.It is a famous meditation centre for Buddhists all over the country and Sagaing Hill is known as a religious retreat.
 
  Amarapura
Situated about 11km south of Mandalay, Amarapura (meaning the Immortal City) is an ancient city of the Konbaung Dynasty.It is noted for its silk weaving industry, the ancient silver smith cottage industry in Ywahtaung just beyond the city limits as well as for its unique teakwood bridge, 1.2 km long, known as U Pein Bridge, that spans the Taungthaman Lake, which dries in the summer.
 
Inwa ( Ava )
Inwa is the capital of an ancient kingdom that dates back 400 years.It was once a flourishing centre of art and literature.It is pleasant place to tour its rural environs in a pony cart.The highlights are the leaning Inwa Tower, the Bagaya monastery, the ancient Maha Bonzan monastery decorated with stucco relief, and the panoramic view of the Ayeyarwaddy River and Sagaing Bridge.
 
  Mingun
A 45-minute boat trip up the Ayeyarwaddy River from Mandalay, Mingun is famous for the large unfinished pagoda of King Bodawphaya and the Mingun Bell, the largest ringing bell in the world.The Mya Thein Tan Pagoda, a little beyond the Mingun Bell is a beautifully terraced ancient pagoda that is worth seeing.
 
Pyin Oo Lwin
At 1100 km above sea level, Pyin Oo Lwin, (formely known as Maymyo), is only one and a half hours drive from Mandalay.Sightseeing around the town in a horse-drawn coach, will certainly give you a pleasant time.The Kandawgyi National Park and the Pwe Kauk water falls are popular picnic spots.It is a town for rest and leisure with its cool climate and marvelous flowers.
 
  Monywa
Situated on the eastern bank of the Chindwin River is a town called Monywa.It is 117 km away from Mandalay and a major trading centre for agricultural produce.A visit to the famous Thanbode Temple and Kyaukka village with its own traditional lacquer ware industry is well worthwhile.
