Bagan and its Environment
  Bagan
On the east bank of the Ayeyarwady River, about 300 km south of Mandalay, Bagan is one of the three most famous Buddhist archaeological sites in the world.The sunrise and sunset over 2000 ancient pagodas and temples is fantastic.The Bagan Dynasty lasted from 11th to 13th century A.D.The architecture of the temples, their wall paintings and sculpture is of world renown and has been the object of research for many learned scholars of East and West.Bagan is also famed for its lacquer ware.
 
Mount Popa
50 km away from Bagan, Mt Popa is said to be the abode of spirits and an important center of worship.Pagodas and temples are located on the top of 736 m high mountains. It is a green and verdant spot and the view of the surrounding plains from the top is fantastic.It is an extinct volcano.
 
  Salay
A day return trip by car or boat from Bagan is a town called Salay.It is situated on the banks of the Ayeyarwady river.Places to visit are the Yokesone monastery, which is more or less a museum full of priceless palm leaf manuscripts, manuscript boxes inlaid with glass mosaic and a host of other antiques; and the Shinbinsargyo temple with hundreds of teak pillars and the Buddha Image made of lacquer.
